Helsinkiläinen nousukiidossa oleva Dylan, tummaääninen laulaja-lauluntekijä, sai alkusysäyksen musiikintekoon toissa kesänä syntymäpäivälahjan seurauksena. Siitä saakka hänen vauhtinsa on ollut huimaa.
”Poikaystäväni tuli eräänä päivänä kotiin, ilmoitti varanneensa minulle studiopäivän lahjaksi ja kehotti tarttumaan kitaraan ja kynään”, Dylan kertoo. Hän ei oikeastaan ollut ala-astevuosien jälkeen edes osannut haaveilla tekevänsä musiikkia tai keikkailevansa ammatikseen. ”Kahden viikon päästä löysin itseni kuitenkin studiosta nauhoittamasta ensimmäistä kappalettani Beanie.”
Äänitettyään Beanien tuottaja tiedusteli oliko materiaalia lisää. Tähän Dylan joutui toteamaan, ettei vielä, mutta pian on. Kuukautta myöhemmin hän veti ensimmäisen keikkansa Bar Loosessa.
”Syksy kului säveltäen. Talvella 2012 duomme täydentyi trioksi ja tuplaantui vuoden kuluessa kuusihenkiseksi kokoonpanoksi”, Dylan muistelee.
Keikkoja viime vuonna hänelle kertyi nelisenkymmentä ympäri Suomea. ”Sain kokea arki-iltojen tunnelmalliset liveklubit, lämppäillä kotimaisia lempiyhtyeitäni, istua keikka-autossa bassovahvistin ja kaksi kitaraa päälleni kasattuna, vetää livenä radiossa ja joulukuussa nousta legendaarisen Tavastia-klubin lavalle.”
Dylanin musiikin voi sijoittaa musiikkiskenessä soulahtavaksi popiksi. ”Minulle kappaleissani kertomani tarinat ovat ensisijaisia – muu seuraa perässä”, lauluntekijä kertoo.
”Musiikkini on osin tajunnanvirran tuotosta, osin harkittua ja hauduteltua ja osin heijastusta siitä, kuka minä olen ihmisenä. Tähän ympärille rakentunut bändi on toki tuonut sovituksillaan ja visioillaan musiikkiini valtavasti uusia ulottuvuuksia.”
Musiikillisesti rakkain esikuva Dylanille on Stevie Wonder. Klassista kitaraa nuorempana soittaessaan hän rakastui myös Francisco Tárregan sävellyksiin.
”Imen vaikutteita läpi genrerajojen, rakastan Damien Ricen lyriikoita, tämän hetkinen lempikappaleeni on Led Zeppelinin Since I’ve Been Loving You -biisistä, ja ihailen Lzzy Halen laulutekniikkaa.”
Dylanin kappaleet syntyvät Dylanin kynästä. ”Toisinaan ne toki saavat alkunsa kivasta kitarariffistä tai sointukuljetuksesta, mutta useimmiten minulla on mielessäni jokin havainto, josta haluan kertoa.”
Riittävän pitkälle jalostetut biisiraakileet hän vie treenikselle, jossa niitä sovitetaan koko yhtyeen voimin. Miten Dylan sitten luonnehtii ympärilleen muotoutuneen yhtyeensä kemioita, onko sillä johtajaa?
”Viralliselta taholta tiedusteltaessa Ms. Dee julistautuu yhtyeensä itseoikeutetuksi matriarkaksi, mutta todellisuudessa taitaa asia mennä niin, että se vie joka kulloinkin parhaiten tietää ja taitaa. Meillä on treeniksellä varsin demokraattinen meininki”, yhtye vastaa yhteen ääneen.
Musiikillista inspiraatiota Dylan kertoo saavansa kappaleista, jotka nostavat ihon kananlihalle. ”Olen siinä mielessä kovin holistinen musiikinkuluttaja, että minun on vaikea pilkkoa kuuntelukokemuksiani paloiksi ja analysoida niitä erikseen. Toisinaan inspiraatio taas lähtee siitä, kun luen jonkin provosoivan uutisen tai huomaan ajattelevani jotakin kovin omituista ja totean, että tästä on joko tehtävä päivitys sosiaaliseen mediaan tai kirjoitettava biisi. Yleensä kirjoitan biisin.”
Lauluntekijän lyriikat kuvaavat usein hänen omia kokemuksiaan ja fiiliksiään. ”Mutta pyrin tuomaan esiin ja paikoin karnevalisoimaankin näkemiäni yhteiskunnallisia ilmiöitä ja epäkohtia.” Mehukkaimpia Dylanille ovat lyriikat, joita esittäessään hän samaistuu täysin itsestään poikkeavan kertojan näkökulmaan: ”On kiinnostavaa tarkastella itselle tuttua ja tavanomaista ympäristöä jonkun toisen vahvuuksilla varustettujen silmälasien läpi”.
Taiteilija toivoo, että keikkatahti kasvaa tulevaisuudessa yhtä eksponentiaalisesti kuin viime vuonna. Työn alla on myös debyyttisinglen julkaisu. Dylania ajaa eteenpäin halu kehittyä niin soittajana, laulajana, biisinkirjoittajana kuin esiintyjänäkin.
”Joskus tuntuu, että ihan pakahdun, kun tajuan minkälaisia kokemuksia vielä on edessä. Otan kaiken kiitollisuudella vastaan.” Tuusulan Kellokosken legendaarisella Männistön lavalla järjestettävän Ilofestivaalin 15.6 avaava Dylan odottaa festivaalipäivältä iloa, aurinkoa ja uskomattomia musiikkikokemuksia.
